| Dumas Lands New Wind Business: Anemometry Specialists |
|
Dumas EDC Welcomes First Permanent Wind Industry Business. Dumas, Texas June 16, 2009—Dumas looks to land its first wind related business. Anemometry Specialists, Inc., an Iowa based company has announced plans to locate a new office in Dumas, Texas. Rob Hach, Founder and President of Anemometry Specialists, has indicated growth plans that include as many as 16 new technical wind energy jobs for the community. Citing a vibrant wind industry and extensive activity in the region, the expanding business looks to staff its new office in Dumas by July 5th. Anemometry (pronounced anna momma tree) means the study of wind. Anemometry Specialists is a full service wind energy assessment company that provides sales and service for wind testing towers, and provides a complete wind assessment for proposed wind farms to determine the specific wind conditions for developers and land owners required for financing. The company currently employs 27 people in Iowa and has a full time meteorologist located in their office in Albuquerque New Mexico which brings the total to 28.With large numbers of wind turbines erected on all sides of this Panhandle community, recently announced new wind farms, new solar and alternative fuel projects being proposed, the Dumas Economic Development Corporation (DEDC) has been focusing much of its marketing and recruitment efforts on landing the support businesses tied to this rapidly growing industry. The DEDC recently provided Amarillo College with $69,000 to establish a Wind/Renewable Energy Training Program at its Moore County Campus. “Dumas is fast becoming a major player in the renewable energy industry. This partnership will provide a great tool for us to use when attracting new business opportunities to the area” said Mike Running, Executive Director of the Dumas Economic Development Corporation. It was just this tool that helped land Anemometry Specialists in Dumas. According to Running, conversations with Mr. Hach had been occurring for the last several months. A recent visit to Dumas by the company’s founder acquainted him with the community as well as Amarillo College’s new program and willingness to help train his new staff. Running indicated that Hach was “extremely impressed” with this asset, the community in general, as well as with DEDC’s efforts to work with his firm. “We chose Dumas because it had a lot to offer. It has a facility for us to start out in and the community has room for our growth. Dumas wasn’t waiting for opportunity to find its community, the town is active in creating opportunities for itself. The town is a comfortable size and not so big that our company would be lost in the landscape. The community seems like it cares that we are joining them and are as excited as we are” stated Mr. Hach. Located in the northern portion of the Texas Panhandle, Dumas is within 3 hours of wind farms generating nearly 2000 mega watts of energy and an estimated 4000 mega watts of proposed developments. “Mr. Hach had indicated that he knew the region was active because he was routinely sending crews to the area and felt they needed to be located in the Panhandle” Running stated. Proposed developments in Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Colorado and Texas have all been on the radar for this international firm. “They have sent crews around the world to do assessments as well as in our own backyard. We are extremely pleased and honored, after looking at other Panhandle communities, that they have chosen Dumas as the location with the best growth potential” added Running. Mr. Hach also noted, “A strong community builds a partnership with their businesses because both the community and the businesses will benefit from the growth of each business. I could tell when I visited Dumas, the community was interested in working together for the benefit of our company.”DEDC will provide a temporary office for Anemometry Specialists at the DEDC offices located at 1015 North Maddox in Dumas. As the firm continues to make adjustments and expand their business in the area, plans include locating a fully staffed facility in the Dumas Business Park. Running indicated that any assistance provided by the DEDC will correspond to the needs of the firm, number of jobs created and salaries earned. Although no incentives have been negotiated, Running stated that he has had discussions with the company regarding some property assistance; however both parties have agreed to wait until a firm growth plan has been established. Although the DEDC sees some great value with new wind farms in the area, Running says that the best value comes in the form of permanent, good paying jobs that the support businesses will provide. “A 10 mega watt farm may provide substantial property tax revenue and a good temporary work force, it only provides one permanent job after it is constructed, but a business that performs technical, operational and maintenance work for wind farms has the potential for numerous permanent good paying jobs that will grow as the number of new turbines increase in the region” stated Running. About the CompanyAnemometry Specialists was founded in 2002 by Rob and Tara Hach. Rob has been involved in the wind energy business since 1994 learning the ropes from some of the early pioneers of the wind energy market. Anemometry Specialists began with two employees and now employs 28 full time experienced staff members. Rob and Tara enjoy being part of the wind energy market and helping their customers with Met tower and wind assessment projects. Rob is an active member of many wind energy associations and organizations including being a board member of the Iowa Wind Energy Association. The addition of the Dumas office will allow Anemometry Specialists to better serve our clients in Texas and the Southern region of the United States. Dumas Economic Development Corporation is a recognized economic development entity in the state of Texas. Mike Running has been with the Corporation since March 2008 and is aggressively seeking out potential wind industry and renewable energy projects for the area. According the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA), Dumas is uniquely situated within hours of an estimated 1400 turbine generators. In addition, Dumas is located within an hour of another proposed 500 wind turbine generators. With so much wind activity in the area, Dumas is perfect for those businesses needing to be near the action.
