Dumas Lands Manufacturer of World's First 100HP Single-Phase Electric Motor
Dumas Lands Manufacturer of World's First 100HP Single-Phase Electric Motor
Dumas, Texas January 19, 2010— The green technology movement has landed in Dumas in the form of an innovative electric motor manufacturer. The Dumas Economic Development Corporation (DEDC) has announced that Written Pole Motors Corporation, a subsidiary of Florida based Precise Power Corporation (PPC), will establish operations in Dumas. The firm plans to assemble its patented and award winning motors, including the world’s first commercially available 100 horsepower single-phase electric motor, in Dumas for global distribution. Citing proximity to distribution networks, market demand and available opportunities, Dumas was chosen over several other communities around the country as the location with the most advantages.  “There is a very large market in and around the Dumas area, with the primary target being that of irrigation along with oil and natural gas well applications.  The encouragement and assistance of the Dumas EDC in making this business relationship possible is gratifying” said George A. Neukom, Jr., Director of PPC.  “We look forward to playing a positive role in the area’s economic development, in addition to the opportunity for job training and placement in conjunction with Amarillo College” said Ronnie J. Barber, President of PPC.  The firm will immediately create 7-10 jobs as they make the transition, but estimate as many as 190 jobs over the next few years as sales and production increase. DEDC and the City of Dumas have approved a job creation package to be provided to the firm to include a $160,000 cash grant, acreage at the Dumas Business Park to construct an assembly plant, and a secondary, not to exceed, grant of $150,000 tied to the additional anticipated jobs to be created and new construction within 5 years. DEDC and the City of Dumas will formally welcome the company to Dumas on Friday, January 22 at 1:00 P.M. as Written Pole Motors presents their technology at the High Plains Irrigation Conference being held at the Amarillo Civic Center.  Mike Running, Executive Director of the Dumas Economic Development Corporation, cites considerable help in landing Written Pole Motors to State Representative David Swinford. “He was extremely helpful in getting Written Pole Motors to locate in Dumas. Everything we asked of him, he did. He is a strong advocate for economic development in Dumas and the Panhandle” added Running. Written Pole Motors will begin assembly of their various sized single-phase electric motors in early spring while temporarily located at the DEDC facilities on North Maddox. In addition, further development of a highly efficient three-phase motor is currently underway and is expected to be built in Dumas in the coming months. With a new anticipated investment expected for the firm, Written Pole Motors expects to initiate an aggressive marketing program to boost sales around the globe. Plans to hire sales and assembly personnel are expected in the coming months and the firm is hoping that their presence in the Panhandle will provide immediate local sales opportunities. Company representatives expect to establish a comprehensive line of services for the region to include service and installation within several hundred miles. In addition, the company is now talking to other local businesses in order to weigh their options for electric panel and motor stand fabrication which they hope will benefit other Dumas businesses. “We are excited about the effects Written Pole Motors will have on our local economy. The fact that they may provide new opportunities for our local businesses makes this deal even sweeter” said Running. Running is also quick to note the positive effects this motor will have on area irrigation. “It has been shown that this motor will save millions of dollars in the area. Those savings will be used to keep our agriculture producers in the black and increase local spending as their operational costs decrease.” Written Pole Motors has proven savings of 50-70% over traditional irrigation engines and says that those savings are common. Running has also looked at the impact for the area these motors will have on the local economy. With thousands of irrigation operations located throughout the immediate area, Running feels that the sale of 400 motors is an achievable and modest expectation. He adds that if the firm sold 400 motors within the area, the savings associated with these purchases would provide an estimated energy savings of nearly $4 million per year; money that Running hopes will be spent in Dumas. “It amazes me how much impact one company can have on a community. Simply put, if Written Pole Motors just provided 30 jobs for Dumas, that impact would be the equivalent of nearly 4,000 jobs in Houston. Add in the savings to the oil and agriculture industries that this motor will create, and this project could be huge for us”, adds Running.   The one-of-a-kind patented design of the motors also allows operators to save millions of dollars in energy costs when compared to fossil fuels such as diesel, natural gas and propane as well as provide a cleaner technology for these operations. The proprietary technology allows the motor to operate much more efficiently and at a lower starting current, but has been identified as a tool to help develop struggling and disadvantaged locations around the globe where they might otherwise be unable to provide electricity. Precise Power has provided generator sets and other products to federal agencies for the last several years to be utilized for sensitive applications. Having recently been invited to the United States Capital to show off their technology, Precise Power feels that the green movement opens up several other opportunities as fuel prices increase, electrical transmission lines become more crowded and increased rural development occurs.  “The timing is right and long overdue for further expansion into the marketplace for large horsepower single-phase Written-Pole® motors.  The Texas Panhandle is ideal for demonstrating to the rest of the country and the world what “going green” really means.  We’re extremely eager to get this new facility underway” as noted by John Roesel, Chairman/CEO of PPC.  About the Company Written Pole Motors parent company, the Precise Power Corporation (PPC) located in Bradenton, Florida is a technology driven manufacturer. They have been in business since 1971 and have developed numerous unique proprietary electric motors, machines and components. There patented products offer significant cost and performance advantages over conventional technology. PPC owns the exclusive worldwide rights and license to patents that cover the Written-Pole® Technology. PPC is a privately held corporation headquartered in Florida and include facilities for R&D, production, marketing, sales, customer support and engineering  The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), National Rural Electric Co-op Association (NRECA), as well as several other U.S. utilities supported PPC in the development of the world’s largest horsepower, single-phase Written-Pole® motor.  R&D Magazine recognized and awarded this motor as one of the most significant technological developments in 1994 and it has become an important product in applications worldwide. PPC has also won awards for a product with significant benefits for rural areas and developing countries, as well as bringing significant economic benefit. They received recognition for their unique technology from the National Society of Professional Engineers in 1997 for its innovative use of engineering principles and materials, and its overall benefit to society, it was recognized as a "Fast 50" technology company in 2000, was selected by Florida Gov. Bush as a "Florida 100" company for its contributions to technology and the Florida economy and the 75-horsepower single-phase motor was selected as finalist for the new product of the year by Plant Engineering Magazine in 2004.

The Written-Pole® Single-Phase Motor offers a revolutionary method for powering large horsepower applications in locations where only single-phase power is available. It is a hybrid concept, which utilizes basic concepts from induction, hysteresis and permanent magnet motors, with several important distinctions. The primary feature which differentiates Written-Pole® single-phase motors from more conventional designs is a continuous layer of ferrite magnets on the surface of the rotor, along with a high-density exciter winding contained within the stator winding. This unique design matches the pole structure of the rotor to the rotational speed of the motor. The result is a motor that combines the desirable starting characteristics of a high-slip, high-power factor cage motor with the energy-efficient operation of an AC permanent magnet motor-- without relying on power electronics, reduced voltage starters or phase converters. The result is a powerful motor with low starting current, high horsepower, high efficiency and enhanced reliability.
Along with the various sized Single Phase Motors, PPC also manufactures the Power-Ride® motor, the 1-to-3® Power Source which uses a Written-Pole® Single-Phase motor to drive a 3-phase generator, Written-Pole® Motor-Generators, Roesel Motor-Generators® (RMG), and RMG-i® (with integral Engine) which provide the ultimate isolation and continuous protection from spikes, sags, momentary and extended outages, and other variations in the utility power which allow for uninterruptable power without the use of batteries. PPC is now preparing to develop and introduce a Three-Phase High Efficiency Motor which will surpass that of any other three-phase motor in the market.
