New Transmission Lines, Immediate Opportunities to Spur Dumas “Green Energy Rush” In an effort to maximize on what is anticipated to be a “gold rush” of activities in the Texas Panhandle, the Dumas Economic Development Corporation will be sending a team of local volunteers to Dallas for the 2010 American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) to staff the Dumas EDC booth. Each year AWEA hosts the WINDPOWER Conference & Exhibition, which is the premier wind energy event in North America, which last year hosted over 23,000 attendees and nearly 1,300 exhibitors. With similar numbers expected in Dallas, WINDPOWER will be the target of this northern Texas Panhandle community hoping to return home with new companies that see the opportunities available. Last year, Dumas EDC was represented by its Executive Director and co-sponsored activities and booth space with the World Economic Development Alliance (WEDA) and the High Ground of Texas, a regional economic development marketing organization that represents 60 different counties in the Panhandle of Texas. “This is the most successful show for us in terms of recruiting new businesses to Dumas” explains Mike Running, Executive Director of the Dumas EDC. “Last year, we attracted three new wind energy related businesses to Dumas because of our activities at WINDPOWER 2009!” Those successes have convinced Running and the Dumas EDC Board of Directors to invest in a new booth display and various events, including giving away a new iPod Touch in an effort to obtain more leads on firms interested in locating in the Dumas area. “With three major transmission projects surrounding our community, we believe we have the best opportunities available in the United States” states Running, “and if we don’t act now and act bold, we could miss out on what is likely to become a major renewable energy boom for us”. Running’s optimism is due to the existing efforts that have occurred in and around Dumas to date: Valero’s McKee Refinery, located 10 miles northeast of Dumas has erected 50 mega watts and has plans to double that in order to provide power to its refining operations; John Deere Wind Energy has constructed turbines in and around the Dumas community; several new wind farms are being developed within a few miles of the community, and Dumas is uniquely positioned within 200 miles of over 4000 mega watts of wind energy. In addition to wind, several projects involving bio-mass, bio-fuel and solar are currently in the works for Dumas and the surrounding area. Running and the Dumas EDC are more enthusiastic about recent plans and announcements involving new electrical transmission projects that he feels will create a rush similar to the oil boom and the gold rush days of years past. “The issue recently has been that of a lack of transmission for the renewable energy industry. These new projects surrounding our community will eliminate that issue, at least for our region” says Running. The projects he refers to include the Southwest Power Pool plans to construct new electrical transmission lines to the north and east of Dumas, the High Plains Express project plans to develop new transmission lines to the west of Dumas and the Competitive Renewable Energy Zone (CREZ) plans to construct to the south of Dumas. Dumas hopes to provide enough information to interested businesses at the WINDPOWER show regarding the opportunities and incentives they have available. With an expansion of their business park, the development of a new spec commercial center, the new Renewable Energy Technical Training program at the Moore County branch of Amarillo College and their ability to help local firms obtain leads, Running feels that Dumas is the most progressive community in the middle of the Class 4+ wind region. “We have the best wind in the world, the most cost effective proposal for business transition, a college that produces trained workers and best people in the world; I can’t think of a better place to locate if your business is interested in making money.” The Dumas Team will be comprised of State Representative David Swinford, the leading wind energy advocate for the state of Texas, Pat Sims, Dumas Mayoral candidate, Jeff Turner, Moore County Hospital Administrator, Danielle Arias, Amarillo College-Moore County Campus Workforce Training Specialist, Shawn Frische, local realtor, Stephanie Tucker, local business woman, Tom Wells, local wind energy business owner and Dumas EDC Staff. “All have donated their time because they believe in the community, they love the community and they know all about the amenities available in the community” stated Running, “I would encourage everyone to come by the booth and meet these fantastic people. They will answer any question honestly and have only one motive; to support any business wishing to locate in Dumas”. The Dumas EDC booth is located at space 8602d near the main entrance under the High Ground of Texas Blimp. Dumas will be passing out invitations to its reception and providing a chance to win a new iPod as well as giving away special treats throughout the show.
